December Brings Holiday Spirit to Santee

Friday, November 30, 2018 12:00:00 AM

The Holiday season is never more evident than December in Santee. With decorations being lit all around town, the same hustle and bustle of readying for the holidays (in a much calmer atmosphere), children out of school, and smiling faces touched by the nip in the air...this is Christmas in Santee.

On December 5th at 6:30 p.m., we begin this most joyous season with reverence as we present the 6th Annual Service of Lessons & Carols. Area church ministers, choirs, praise dancers, and musicians join the community in a night a praise and thanksgiving by reading from Scripture and singing old favorite carols as the giant tree is lit at the Santee Conference Center. This is also the evening when luminaries are lit for honored family members and special friends. The luminaries illuminate the area around the tree and the sight is spectacular! Funds collected from the sale of our luminaries are used to provide families and those in need food and such so that they can enjoy the holiday season also. Our community is a special place all year long, but especially thoughtful at the holidays.

Santa will make a special appearance at the parade down Bass Drive on Sunday afternoon, December 9th beginning at 4:00. Floats, decorated cars and trucks, the Lake Marion High School JROTC unit, civic organizations, motorcycle riders, notable town figures, and some surprises march down Bass Drive with music provided by Lake Marion High School marching band. Santa has a special escort by the Santee Fire District. After the parade, he will remain for a short time at the Santee Conference Center to visit with the children and give out treats provided by the Rotary Club of Lake Marion. It is a fun afternoon for everyone!

Even though snow will be falling in some area of the country, Santee usually has a temperate climate and golfers from all over the northern half of the nation and Canada dust the snow off of their golf shoes, clean their golf clubs, and visit hoping to get a little warmer and lower that handicap. They enjoy the three courses in town and as always, our own style of Southern hospitality.

The lake is not likely to ice over (ever), so fishermen try their rods and reels in the water to fish the deeper water for Largemouth Bass, Stripers, and Crappie. Some fishermen will take this opportunity to practice for the Crappie USA tournament to be held in Santee March 15 and 16, 2019. Early morning kayakers enjoy the beautiful views in the cypress swamps. The lake is beautiful this time of year.

Come for the holidays; stay for a lifetime. Santee is truly an oasis.
